Child Protection Policy
Effective since September 2014
Dear West End Presbyterian Church Volunteer:
West End Presbyterian Church (WEPC) Session has approved of a Child Protection Policy to minimize the risk of sexual abuse to children and youth participating in various programs at WEPC while providing a safe, nurturing and open environment. It also attempts to protect Church staff, and volunteers from any form of endangerment, abuse or harassment.
It is the task of the Safeguards Committee to implement this policy. All adults who serve as children and youth volunteers as well as employees are required to go through a screening process as outlined in the “WEPC Child Protection Policy.” We have partnered with Protect My Ministry (PMM) to offer the online training consisting of eight segments, and background checks for each of you. This company was recommended by our church insurance carrier as one that has been used by many churches and has worked closely with legal counsel to protect everyone on our campus that are paid employees or volunteers helping the children and youth entrusted to us by their parent(s).
There are four steps you will need to complete in order to be a volunteer as stated in the church guidelines. They include:
(1) Read the WEPC Child Protection Policy (click on the the Child_Protection_Policy_WEPC.pdf at the end of this letter);
(2) Complete the online application at (click the blue link here) Protect My Ministry and acknowledge that you have read and understand the entire policy. You will also be asked to read the Disclosure and Authorization Form. Please note that the Social Security number must be filled in. If you have a strong objection to giving your SS# please fill in the blanks with random numbers;
(3) You will then receive an email inviting you to take the training online at PMM. The entire course is 8 parts plus a short test. It will take approximately an hour to complete. We encourage you to take all 8 parts but at this time we are only requiring parts 1, 4, 6 and 8;
(4) Please email Mark Bare, [email protected] after you have completed parts 1, 4, 6 and 8.
Please complete this process as soon as possible. We appreciate the work that you do to make the numerous programs at WEPC so successful for our children and youth. Without you we would not be able to make this happen. It is the intent of this policy to not only protect the children, but to protect you the well intending Church staff and dedicated WEPC volunteer leaders.
If you are unable to access the Policy online, you may come to the Church during office hours and use a computer to read the Policy. Please contact Martha Parker in the church office to schedule a time. A hard copy can be made available as well.
Should you have questions regarding Protect My Ministry, please contact the church office.
